FAMILY COURT
The Honorable Jill Ganus

Judge Ganus is a district judge for the family court of the Bessemer Division of Jefferson County; she was appointed in January 2006 and was subsequently elected in November 2006. Judge Ganus earned her J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1991 and earned a B.A. in Political Science, with a minor in English, from the University of Alabama in 1988. Judge Ganus was an assistant district attorney in the Bessemer Division of Jefferson County prior to her appointment and election to the bench.

John Halcomb Referee/Special Judge

Referee John Halcomb was appointed by Judge Jill Ganus in 2008 Hearing cases involving Juvenile Delinquency, Truancy, Child Support, Children in Need of Supervision, Dependent Children, Protection from Abuse and other various issues that fall within the jurisdiction of family court. Earned his Juris Doctorate from Birmingham School of Law August 2002 and his B.A. Degree from University of Alabama in May 1999.Associate Attorney with the law firm Donald W. Stewart, P.C. (2004 – 2008)

Handled Cases involving Mass Torts/Complex Litigation, Personal Injury, Divorce, Probate, Criminal, Appellate, and Workers’ Compensation. Notable cases include Vioxx, Travelers Insurance Co., Bice v. Micon, Lowery v. Honeywell, and Killings v. Ford Motor Co.

Personal and Civic:

CIVIL DIVISION
The Honorable Eugene Verin

Judge Verin, a 1978 honors graduate of Rutgers University and a 1981 graduate of Howard University School of Law, has served as a Circuit Judge in Bessemer since 1998.  He presently handles civil and domestic relations cases.  After graduating from law school Judge Verin served as a staff attorney for the Tuscaloosa Regional Office of the Legal Services Corporation of Alabama (1981 – 1983); an associate attorney with the law firm of Shores, Larkin & Massie (1983 – 1985); an Assistant District Attorney with the Bessemer District Attorneys Office (1985 – 1987); and, for the next eleven years until his election as circuit judge, as a part-time municipal judge for the city of Bessemer while practicing law in his own general practice law firm.  Judge Verin currently is the Executive Director of the newly created Jefferson County Lawyer Mentoring Program.  His numerous professional activities have included past presidencies of the Magic City Bar Association; Alabama Lawyers Association; West Jefferson Kiwanis Club; Judicial Council of the Alabama Lawyers Association; Bessemer Cut-Off Domestic Violence Task Force; and, the Birmingham American Inn of Court.

The Honorable Edward B. Vines

Judge Vines, District Judge, 10th Judicial Circuit, Jefferson County Bessemer, Alabama. He earned his Bachelor’s in General Studies with a concentration in counseling, Samford University, cum laude. Juris Doctor, Birmingham School of Law, Honor Graduate.Private Law Practice, Bessemer, Alabama General practice including civil, probate, and municipal (2005-2008); he also served as Deputy Probate Judge, (appointed) Jefferson County Alabama. Conducted hearings relating to adoptions, legitimations and settlement of estates (2001-2005). Assistant Tax Collector, (elected) Jefferson County Alabama. Supervised office consisting of thirteen (1994-2001)
